Record Store Day 2023: Vinyl Keeps on Surging

Happy Record Store Day! One of my favorite days of the year. And it just keeps getting bigger. Thank you Taylor Swift fans! What started in 2007 as a rather low-key affair, Record Store Day (RSD) has become a community highlight around the country centered around the local record store. Record Store Day brings together fans, artists, and thousands of independent record stores across the world. An increasing number of records are pressed specifically in honor of the day.

Taylor Swift was the star of the day…again. In 2022, she released the lakes and became the first-ever global ambassador for RSD. Today it was folklore: the long pond sessions. The people first in line, behind me, in front of me, and all over got up early on a Saturday morning to get in line for her. She deserves so much credit for introducing thousands of younger people to vinyl albums and record stores. Just a few of the other artists releasing anticipated albums today: Stevie Nicks, Beach House, Ramones, Siouxsie and the Banshees, David Bowie, Van Halen, Scott Weiland, Duran Duran, Tori Amos, Blur, David Byrne, perennial RSDers, the Grateful Dead, and the one I purchased, Rich Kids, their 1978 lone album, Ghost of Princes in Towers, black vinyl. Rich Kids featured Midge Ure (Ultravox), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols), and producer Mick Ronson (David Bowie). The album contains their self-titled sole hit and other forgotten scorchers.

Boo Boo Records told me that over half of their sales are LP’s. Definitely on the comeback. As you know, I burned that bridge a while ago and fortunately, some of my collection is now in yours.
With the demise of the CD continuing, maybe someday they’ll have a CD Store Day!

    1. Thanks, MSquared! Boo Boos still has the front room devoted to CDs, but I don’t know how much longer that will last. Yes, some of your albums are now proudly in my collection. I’m taking good care of them. I played the Violent Femmes debut the other day.

  2. Rich Kids! I bought that album waaaay back in the day, I was pretty sure I was the only one in the USA who had it 🙂 “scorchers” indeed. Haven’t heard it in ages. Turn it up!

BTW love the Elvis and London Calling albums up on the wall!

    1. Thanks, BrianS! I never had the Rich Kids album until now. I re-discovered yesterday that I have the “Rich Kids” “45” single. It’s a blank red sleeve with no identification on it. Thanks for noticing the wall art. When I saw that Elvis record in the bin at Boo Boos for #3.00 years ago, I knew where it was going.
