I’m checking out new music from three bands that I just recently discovered. One band, Turnstile, I mentioned earlier in my top songs of 2021 post (Top Songs of 2021: Rock and Indie Bands Still Making Noise). Two are newer bands exemplified by fuzzy lo-fi sounds, brightened up by vibrant female lead vocals. I thought I’d pass along some snippets, as I continue to explore their songs.
Turnstile
Hardcore punk is the common term used to describe this Baltimore band. I don’t know about “hardcore;” they have broadened their sound and are not a screaming sonic assault on the senses. Certainly, some punk energy in there, but so much more. Their 2021 album, Glow On, is one of the highlights of the year and has been recognized as such by many best-of lists. They slow it down some, introduce some synth-pop moments, and even a little funk. Hard to pick one song, but “Blackout” with its power chords, captivating guitar, and genuine affirmation, “If it makes you feel alive/Well, then I’m happy to oblige,” is worth a listen. The kind of song that lets you know rock n’ roll is still alive.
Empath
I guess you’d call Empath, from Philadelphia PA, a noise band with flourishes of pop and punk. One of their earlier EPs was a cassette tape to really exhibit their homemade vibe. They’ve just released their second full-length album, Visitor, which continues to refine their sound. Cleaner and slower than their earlier punk melodies, which allows Catherine Elicson’s voice to stand out above the clutter. They’re still sloppy-by-design. Warped and disorderly with new wave charm. Have a listen to “Diamond Eyelids.”
Sweeping Promises
Boston-based Sweeping Promises also had some DIY projects before coming out with their first LP in 2020, Hunger for a Way Out. They’ve just released a single, “Pain Without a Touch” which still has a basement feel to it but couched in a catchy chorus led Lira Mondal. The dissonant guitar provides the sonic energy. Have a taste of them here:

You’re welcome, Barcelona1. Thanks for listening.
Enjoyed them all, Empath’s “Diamond Eyelids” was the standout for me. Assuming I can find Empath on Spotify I’ll definitely give the new full-length a listen. Thanks!
