After the film festivals and award shows (Producers, Directors, Screen Actors, Golden Globes, and more) many film categories seem to take on a pre-ordained outcome by the time we get to the Oscars (Best Actor, Chadwick Boseman, for instance). Due to a combination of streaming, VOD, and good old DVDs, I was able to see all the best picture nominees, except one; Nomadland, the one with the momentum to take home the big prize (another reason I need to sign up for Hulu, A Handmaid’s Tale being the first). Here’s my predictions for the major categories (I omitted the short film categories, Animated, Live Action, and Documentary, because I’m not familiar with them at all):
- Best Picture: Nomadland
- Director: Chloe’ Zhao
- Lead Actor: Chadwick Boseman
- Lead Actress: Viola Davis
- Supporting Actor: Daniel Kaluuya
- Supporting Actress: Yuh-Jung Youn
- Original Screenplay: Trial of the Chicago Seven
- Adapted Screenplay: Nomadland
- Documentary Feature: My Octopus Teacher
- Animated Feature: Soul
- Cinematography: Nomadland
- Visual Effects: Tenet
- Film Editing: Sound of Metal
- International Film: Another Round
- Costume Design: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
- Makeup and Hairstyling: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
- Production Design: Mank
- Sound: Sound of Metal
- Score: Soul
- Original Song: One Night in Miami (Speak Now”)
The Academy Awards are coming Sunday, April 25th on ABC. Unlike other award shows during the pandemic, the Oscars will be held on location at two venues in Los Angeles: Dolby Theater and Union Station. No Zoom! We’ll check in after the show and talk about how it came off, the state of movies in 2021, and how I did on my predictions.
Trivia ? – Who won Best Actor and Best Actress in 2020?
Answer: Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Renee Zellweger (Judy) (Is it just me or is it hard to remember just a year ago? Parasite as Best Picture I remember, but the others not so much)
